Public Art team ~ Career Day sweeps Milwaukee Avenue with hundreds of volunteers !

                                 www.careerdayteam.org

Chicago, IL, October 15, 2005: The art in public spaces team of Career Day has organized a one day socially based performance on Milwaukee Avenue. The performance will be a collective of volunteer sweepers that will hand sweep from Belmont Ave to Kinzie Street along Milwaukee Ave. The Career Day team is interested in the socially based action of art in the everyday life of the city. Hand made brooms with an exaggerated scale and sculptural function will be passed by volunteer sweepers block by block along Milwaukee Avenue. This collective effort mimics a relay or tag team approach to creating social connection.

With the volunteer assistance of Chicago artists and community members this performance will connect neighborhoods and residents with conversation and a shared labor. This “day of work” will celebrate the efforts of the everyday Chicago worker. Milwaukee Avenue connects so many people of the city, this is one symbol of Chicago connecting – and creating a conversation. Let’s get sweeping!………

If you would like to help sweep Milwaukee Avenue on October 15, 2005 –
Please log on to the www.careerdayteam.org website, and follow the directions. Career Day will respond, with directions and confirmations.

Keeler, Machnic and Browder are Career Day. The team is interested in the action of the artist in the city.  The studio is the city, the artist moves in and around, creating conversation with others in the acts of everyday life. The approach is humorous linking a celebration of a daily action with socially based ideas of environment by creating conversation with people – who might not know one another.  How can we create conversations with people about the destiny of the city?  Career Day seeks to unite neighbors and old friends along the way with this process of creating social connection.

All Sweepers will be visually connected via their matching uniforms and artist made brooms.
The brooms are long handled sculptural tools, and are made from recycled goods from local hardware stores and industry. During the performance all Sweepers will be documenting conversations via mini disc recorders. This footage with photos and video, will be later posted on the Career Day website centering on the process of the sweep. (www.careerdayteam.org)

We look forward to seeing you !
